Here are the top stories in Birmingham today:
- A 70-year-old man was struck and killed by a car over the weekend while trying to check on another driver involved in a car accident with him. On Saturday morning, Oliver Ledwell was struck by a car along I-59/20 near Arkadelphia Road in Birmingham. According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, Ledwell had been involved in an accident and was struck by a third car after getting out to check on the other driver in his wreck. Ledwell died at UAB Hospital later that day. (WIAT - CBS42.com)
- Surgeons in the Heersink School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham are the first in Alabama to offer radiofrequency ablation, which is a new therapy to treat benign nodules from the thyroid by means of ablation, or heat. (UAB News)
- Stand-up comedian John Mulaney has announced a new 33-city tour that includes a stop in Birmingham in early April. Mulaney will perform at the Legacy Arena as the eleventh city on his new “From Scratch” tour. The comedian has not released a comedy special since 2018 on Netflix. However, he has appeared on other Netflix properties including “Big Mouth” and “Oh, Hello on Broadway.” (WIAT - CBS42.com)
- An 18-wheeler jackknifed on I-20/59 WB at Exit 121 Bush Blvd. in Jefferson County around 11:15 a.m. The accident blocked the right lanes, causing traffic delays, but there has been no word on injuries. (WBRC)
- On Saturday, Birmingham Police Chief Patrick D. Smith offered condolences to the affected families of four homicides — then, two more people died in homicides on Sunday. (Birmingham Patch)
