May 2019 Health Scores, Jefferson County: 7 Eateries 85 Or Below

The Jefferson County Health Department inspected 168 restaurants in May of 2019, with seven scoring an 85 or below.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Jefferson County Department of Health inspected 168 restaurants in the county in the month of May. Of those, the vast majority passed their inspections with great scores. However, seven eateries in Jefferson County were given a score of 85 or lower.

Here are the restaurants that scored an 85 or worse in this month's health inspections, and why:

Steak N Shake, 1817 Montgomery Highway, Hoover (69): Points were deducted for raw ground beef patties and cheese stored in the cooler out of temperature; raw shell eggs were stored above cases of milk; several in-use knives were stored under the nacho cheese dispenser (a soiled surface); failure to provide hot water for sanitization in the dish machine; broken temperature gauge for wash and sanitizing rinse on dish machine; interior and exterior surfaces of the majority of the facility are soiled (heavy accumulation of food debris) - especially the microwave, the computer equipment, the surfaces underneath the equipment, the interior and exterior surfaces of most of the equipment; door on the freezer in the shake station is hanging off track (doesn't fully close); several of the clean pans were wet stacked; condensate leaks in the make table cooler; dumpster enclosure needs to be cleaned; several dead roaches near the electrical panels on the line; issing floor tiles in the shake area; several of the FRP corners are missing; dust accumulation on the hoods above the ovens, skillet, and dish machine; employee's personal belongings (tobacco products, perfume, etc.) were stored with and above napkins, condiments, etc.; a container of DipIt cleaner was stored above the clean dishes.

Birmingham Garden Inn; 7901 Crestwood Boulevard, Birmingham (80): Points were deducted for failure to train employees on proper food handling; one was out of temperature; gallon of milk is expired in the side by side door refrigerator; hot water at the handsink in the kitchen only reached a temperature of 75 degrees; failure to keep dumpster doors and lids closed.

McDonald's; 765 Academy Drive, Bessemer (80): Points were deducted for staff handling french fries with bare hand contact by picking up fries with thumb inserted in fries; failure to maintain food at proper temperature; black residue on top of bottom RI cooler under makeline; several discolored and pitted amber food trays; several french fry containers stored on bottom shelf near grease spills and sandwich boxes with stains on outer box stored on top of makeline; failure to keep water at proper temperature; large amount of trash and food on ground around dumpster; drink spills on floor in lobby under cabinet at fountain drink machine.

Applebee's; 5050 Academy Lane, Bessemer (82): Points were deducted for failure to provide food safety training for all food handlers as required; failure to keep food at proper temperature; dirty pans were stacked inverted, and dirty glassware at bar area; extremely dusty fans in WI cooler where steaks are stored; grease spills on top of grease receptacle; damaged base tiles and floor tile with standing water inside WI cooler.

Triple M Food Store: 1546 Shuttlesworth Dr., Birmingham, (84): Points were deducted for commercially processed TCS foods stored in RI cooler past the date limit set by the manufacturer (milk, hot dogs, sausages); unclean retail shelves and bottom of RI coolers; boxes of single service cups stored on the floor in back storage area where ice machine is located; failure to provide paper towels at both handwashing sinks; live roaches in facility; dead roaches throughout facility; failure to maintain physical facilities in good repair; failure to replace bulbs in WI cooler and where ice machine is located; personal food items stored on top shelf of RI cooler.

Drury Inn & Suites; 3510 Grandview Parkway, Inverness (85): Points were deducted for food stored at improper temperature; failure to cover food properly while stored; can opener blade heavily soiled with debris; ice machine guard is soiled with pinkish residue.

Machete's Mexican Restaurant; 591 Allison Bonnet Memorial Parkway, Dolomite (85): Points were deducted because a food worker cutting fruit was observed handling the food with their bare hands; food was stored directly on the floor in several areas; no water available at the cooks line hand sink; dumpster side doors were open and the dumpster had trash in it; rodent droppings in the kitchen, in the hall area outide the WI storage unit, the dish washing room and the equipment and food storage back area.
