Mayor Woodfin Wants City To Fund New Band Uniforms For Schools

After Mountain Brook High School donated band uniforms to Woodlawn, Mayor Randall Woodfin says he wants the city to fund more.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - A gracious donation by the Mountain Brook High School band to Woodlawn High School's band has prompted Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin to suggest some action by the city. Woodfin is suggesting the city help fund new band uniforms for all of the city's high schools.

Mountain Brook High School last week sent their old uniforms to Woodlawn - the schools share the same team colors - and a Birmingham embroidery shop designed and stitched on patches to cover Mountain Brook's Spartan head logo with the Woodlawn name, as multiple people stepped up to take care of the costs, according to a story by Alabama Media Group.

"The bottom line is, our students deserve the best in regards to equipment and band uniforms," Woodfin said. "That is why I am happy to support and make a recommendation to the Birmingham City Council that we, the city, purchase band uniforms for all of the city's high schools.

Woodfin issued a statement Tuesday on social media:

"This is great news for us because we know that for many of our students, band is the gateway to college, and college is the gateway to a solid start in life," Birmingham City Schools Superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring said in a statement. "In addition, we know that band helps to cultivate leadership, collaboration and pride, all skills that contribute to success in life."
