MLK Day 2019: What's Open, Closed In Birmingham

January 21 is the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, and most state and federal offices will be closed.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Monday, January 21 is the official observane day for Martin Luther King, Jr,'s birthday, and as a national holiday, many agencies and businesses will be closed or have limited services.

Although King's birthday is January 15, the national holiday falls on the 21st. In addition to being a national holiday, the day is also a National Day of Service, and Hands On Birmingham has several opportunities to help in the community here.

Here is a list of what is open and what is closed on Martin Luther King Day 2018:

  • Federal offices - Closed
  • State offices - closed
  • City and county offices - Closed
  • Courts - Closed
  • U.S. Post Office - Closed, no service
  • Fed Ex - Open, normal pick-up and delivery schedule
  • UPS - Open, normal pick-up and delivery
  • Banks - Closed
  • Stores and malls - Open
  • Stock markets - Closed
  • Schools and universities - Closed
  • Trach pick-up - Most will be suspended
  • Public transportation- Limited or moderated service
  • National Parks - Open, and parks that charge admission will waive costs on MLK Day.
