More Than 50 Coronavirus Deaths In Jefferson County In 2021

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Just a little more than a week into 2021, Jefferson County has already reported more than 50 deaths from COVID-19, as the virus continues to spread and fill up hospitals throughout the state.

Since the pandemic began 10 months ago, Jefferson County has reported 57,609 cases of the virus, and 776 deaths. On average, Jefferson County hospitals are at 74 percent capacity, with 19 percent of the beds used by COVID-19 patients.

Here are the daily numbers of new COVID-19 cases and deaths in Jefferson County this year:

• Jan. 1: 719 new cases, 22 deaths
• Jan. 2: 563 new cases, 0 deaths
• Jan. 3: 391 new cases, 0 deaths
• Jan. 4: 337 new cases, 3 deaths
• Jan. 5: 995 new cases, 3 deaths
• Jan. 6: 687 new cases, 13 deaths
• Jan. 7: 792 new cases, 10 deaths
• Jan. 8: 786 new cases, 12 deaths

Jefferson County was by far the leader in new cases in Alabama Friday, with Madison County a distant second at 400 new cases.

• Jefferson County: 786 new cases
• Madison County: 400 new cases
• Mobile County: 356 new cases
• Montgomery County: 248 new cases
• St. Clair County: 218 new cases
