More Retailers Staying Closed Thanksgiving Day

Many retailers that opened for business last year on Thanksgiving have opted to close this year.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Call it an experiment that perhaps failed. Last year dozens of retailers were open on Thanksgiving, letting shoppers begin the Christmas shopping season early. This year, many businesses have changed their tune. The pushback on Thanksgiving shopping several national stores vowing to keep their doors closed on Thanksgiving. Those taking the day off from the Nov. 23 shopping frenzy include Burlington, Costco, Publix, Sam's Club and Staples.

National retailers that are expected to open on Thanksgiving include: Belk at 4 p.m., Best Buy at 5 p.m., Kohl's at 5 p.m., Macy's at 5 p.m., Dick's Sporting Goods at 6 p.m., and Walmart at 6 p.m. Tracking sites have posted holiday ads online in the last few days. Christmas falls 32 days after Thanksgiving this year, one day more than a year ago, and is on a Monday instead of Sunday, giving consumers an extra weekend day to complete their shopping.
