National Cereal Day: What Cereal Is Alabama's Favorite?
Thursday, March 7 is National Cereal Day, and you may be surprised to know what the most popular cereal is in Alabama.
BIRMINGHAM, AL - Today is National Cereal Day, if you did not already know. Judging by the popularity of cereal in the United States, one might think that National Cereal Day would be a much more recognizable holiday. A study by the Physics Factbook says the average American consumes about 10 pounds or 160 bowls of cereal per year or about 4.5 kilograms. This may seem like a lot but America is only ranked fourth in cereal consumption. England, Ireland, and Australia rank higher than the US.
In 1863 the first type of cereal was created - called granula made from graham flour - by Dr. James Jackson. In 1902 Dr. John Harvey Kellogg created Corn Flakes and he later formed a company devoted to cereal named after him. The Post cereal company created by C.W. Post was also founded in the early 1900s.
