New Birmingham Fire Chief, Staff Sworn In

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Birmingham’s new fire chief, Cory D. Moon, was sworn in last week, as he and his new administration begin a new era for Birmingham Fire and Rescue.

Chief Moon joined BFRS on March 26, 2001. During his time with the department, he served as a firefighter/EMT from 2001 – 2012; promoted to lieutenant in 2012; promoted to captain in 2015; and promoted to battalion chief in 2017. He was promoted to fire chief in October 2019, but did not take the oath of office until Feb. 3, following the retirement of interim fire chief John Whitmer.

In his earlier leadership roles with the department, Chief Moon served as chief of training and safety, battalion chief in operations, department safety officer, technical rescue team leader and recruit school instructor.

Moon's new administration includes:

  • Julius Purifie, deputy fire chief
  • Decimus Williamson, assistant fire chief
  • Matthew LaMonte, assistant fire chief
  • Larry Brown, assistant fire chief

Moon attended Birmingham’s Central Park Elementary School, Green Acres Middle School and West End High School. After high school, he earned an associate of science degree with a concentration in fire science from Lawson State Community College in Birmingham.
