New Charter School To Open In Birmingham With Aviation Focus
A new charter school, with an aviation and aerospace focus, will open in the fall 2022.
BIRMINGHAM, AL — A new charter school in Birmingham is expected to open in the fall of 2022 at Birmingham's Southern Museum of Flight campus. The school will have an aviation and aerospace focus, according to a release from New Schools for Alabama.
Reuben Morris, who has been an educator and school leader in Birmingham, Alabama and Denver, Colorado, is slated to open the Alabama Aerospace and Aviation High School, a school that will integrate aerospace aviation into its academic courses.
"The School Founders Program is an incredible chance for me to learn as much as I can, while also giving me the time to build strong relationships within the community and with parents well before the launch of the school," Morris said. "Our school will provide students the opportunity to engage in multidisciplinary projects, enroll in dual-credit courses with local colleges and universities, and work in apprenticeships with local aerospace industry firms leading to industry recognized credentials."
Morris said the school will also focus on creating a racially, socioeconomically and gender-diverse learning environment. Students who are currently entering seventh grade will be eligible for the school’s first ninth grade class.
