New Jefferson County Sheriff Announces Transition Team

Jefferson County Sheriff-Elect Mark Pettway on has announced the team that will help him transition into the new role.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Beginning January 14, 2019, Jefferson County will have a new sheriff for the first time in two decades. Sheriff-elect Mark Pettway will become Jefferson County's first African-American sheriff, and announced this week the team that will help him transition into his new role.

In a pres conference Monday, Pettway said he looks forward to serving the county, and that he has assembled a team of high-level civic leaders for his transition team.

“Over the last few weeks following the election, I have worked hard with my campaign staff to put the right team in place to ensure that we are prepared to lead this county in the best manner possible, “ Pettway said. “I am confident that the people we have chosen will offer valuable insight and tools that will set a new tone for the Jefferson County Sheriff department.”

The team includes seven volunteers:

  • Emory Anthony, an attorney and former municipal judge in Birmingham
  • Raymond Brooks, past chairman of the Black Chief officers Committee, and a past chairman of the Birmingham Housing Authority Board of Commissioners.
  • Judge U.W. Clemon, who was a judge for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama where he served for nearly three decades before his retirement in 2009.
  • Ashley Curry, mayor of Vestavia Hills.
  • Henry Irby, former interim chief of police for the Birmingham Police Department.
  • Amber Ladner, veteran criminal defense attorney.
  • Hunter Williams, Birmingham City Councilman representing District 2.
