New Pizza Joint Coming To 5 Points South

A new pizza restaurant is opening in the former Cosmo's Pizza space in the Pickwick Plaza in 5 Points South.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Cosmo's Pizza was a 5 Points South staple for more than two decades, but its closing last year left an empty spot in the Pickwick Plaza. That spot will now house a new pizza restaurant, which will open this weekend. Libertines Pizza Co. is set to open Saturday, October 6.

Chef Ben Vaughn, who opened Root to Tail in Mountain Brook last year, is behind Libertines, and said the new pizza concept will adopt the same model employed at Root to Tail: sourcing local ingredients from The Urban Food Project by REV Birmingham and other farms within 100 miles of the city.

According to the Birmingham Business Journal, the pizza selection includes 10 pizzas, some of which are fairly familiar while others are unique. The Black and Bleu comes with tomatoes, mozzarella, blackened chicken, kimchi, gorgonzola cream, roasted mushrooms, and basil. The Popeye comes with tomatoes, spinach, mozzarella, ricotta, baby spinach, and house-made marinara. The Ham and Egger comes with marinara, mozzarella, mushrooms, ham, farm egg, artichokes, basil, and provolone. The Fungi Pie includes mozzarella, home-made truffle spread, roasted local mushrooms, crispy prosciutto di parma, and basil.
