BIRMINGHAM, AL — Getting around in the city for Birmingham residents can be a hassle, with parking shortages, mass transit issues and other concerns voiced by residents and visitors over the years as the city grows its business districts. But one Birmingham businessman has launched a company that might help ease that burden, and add fun to getting around town in the process.

Glenn Drennen launched Crosstown Scooters this week in Birmingham, which provides motorized scooter rental for use throughout the city.

The idea for Crosstown Scooters came to Drennen while on vacation with his family in July.

"I took my family to Miami Beach and we rented motor scooters to ride around town," Drennen said. "We enjoyed it very much and thought it was a great way to experience the city. We returned to Birmingham and realized that there are no companies doing this here. Since we own a gas station property in Lakeview that has a large portion of the property undeveloped we decided we would build out a scooter business."

Crosstown Scooters is located at 3424 6th Ave South and provides gas-fueled scooters for a rental fee — which for the month of September is just $10 an hour.

"The city needs something like this very badly because there are no rental companies right now," Drennen said. "Locals and tourists need a way to enjoy the city and connect the districts and also have a vehicle that can park easily."

Drennen said the city has been supportive of his endeavor and that so far, feedback has been "overwhelmingly positive."
