Here are the top three stories in Birmingham today:
- On Wednesday, an altercation between a 27-year-old man and the Birmingham police and turned deadly when officers shot the man on Morris Avenue. According to the police, the incident began just before 6 p.m. as an altercation between Keleen Rashad Connell and police officers in the Tom Brown Village Housing Community. Connell fled the scene and was pursued by Birmingham officers. (Birmingham Patch)
- A new grant program, Magic City Match, is distributing $500K to Black-owned businesses in Birmingham. The program is funded by Prosper Birmingham and will reward grant packages and business development guides to 13 Black-owned businesses. Applications will be accepted from Feb. 24 to Mar. 4. - Accelerator for America recently announced Birmingham Mayor Randall L. Woodfin will join the organization's Advisory Council. The Accelerator was created to develop and share tools to help local governments invest the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Mayor Woodfin was sworn as the 30th mayor of Birmingham in 2017 and, that same year, the Accelerator was founded by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti amidst federal inaction and retrenchment from cities. - After nearly two months of restricted traffic on the deteriorating Rainbow Bridge downtown, officials have officially placed barricades in front of it to prevent commuters from driving and parking. Pedestrians, bicyclists, and individuals on scooters can continue to use the bridge. (WBRC)
