Power Outage At Atlanta Airport Affects BHM Over The Weekend

A power outage at the Atlanta-Hartsfield Airport over the weekend caused delays and cancellations at Birmingham's airport.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - A power outage at Atlanta-Hartsfield Airport, the busiest airport in the world, caused flight cancellations, delays and re-routing over the weekend. The re-routing caused increased traffic at Birmingham's airport. Not only were flights from Birmingham to Atlanta cancelled, which affected almost all Delta flights in and out of BHM, but five flights scheduled to land in Atlanta were re-routed to Birmingham.

The outage Sunday, which has been reported to be the result of a fire, caused the cancellation of 11 flights scheduled to arrive in Birmingham.

"The fire was located adjacent to redundant circuit cables and switching mechanisms serving the airport and those cabled were damaged, resulting in the outage and loss of redundant service methods," Georgia Power said in a written statement.
