Here are the top three stories today in Birmingham:

  1. A demonstration is being planned for Saturday afternoon in support of Ukraine following its invasion by Russian forces. The “Stand With Ukraine” gathering in Birmingham’s Railroad Park is planned to begin at 2 p.m. The event is being organized by Ilya Blokh, who is the son of a Ukrainian father and a Russian mother. According to Blokh, his goal is to “just show that we care.” (AL.com)
  2. On Wednesday night, a 27-year-old man was shot and killed by Birmingham police. Now, the victim's family and local civil rights leaders want answers regarding the incident. The Birmingham Police Department has not released many details surrounding the shooting death of Keleen Connell, other than saying an altercation led to a foot chase that ended in the shooting. Local Black Lives Matter spokesperson Eric Hall is demanding answers. (Birmingham Patch)
  3. The Birmingham Public Library system is launching a new series of blogs soon that highlight some of the best programs happening across all BPL locations.
