Restaurant Health Scores For June: Who Made The Grade

These Jefferson County restaurants scored an 85 or below in the most recent health inspections by the JeffCo Department of Health.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Jefferson County Department of Health released the resukys of its health inspections for Jefferson County restaurants for the month of June, and while a vast majority of eateries scores well on their inspection, there were a few area restaurants that did not make the grade.

Here are the restaurants that scored an 85 or below in their June health inspections:

Outback Steakhouse, 3440 Galleria Circle, Hoover (72): Points deducted for failure to provide food safety training for all food handlers; a condensate leak in the WI freezer and frozen condensate inside an opened pan of breaded shrimp; failure to maintain food at proper temperature; pre-portioned bags of sugar and flour were not labeled; the ice machine, dicer (old onion and tomato debris), lemon slicer, lemon squeezer, salad spinner, and most of the plastic and metal pans and utensils (tongs, scoops, ladles, etc.) are soiled; large stand mixer, the interior surfaces of most of the equipment on the line, and the large sugar container (tea station) are soiled; no sanitzer buckets available during food prep; failure to allow utensils to air dry before stacking; the cases of beverage napkins were stored on a top shelf in the employee restroom (above the toilet); the faucet at the pre-wash station is leaking; unclean facilities.

Subway, 1628 Crestwood Blvd., Irondale (72): Points deducted for not having a person in charge present during inspection; failure to provide food safety training for new employees; no employee on schedule has CFSM certification; employee personal drink stored on shelf near clean utensils; failure to maintain food at proper temperature; failure to properly sanitize utensils; employee washing dishes in 3-compartment sink with soiled wash water; soiled knife stored in clean utensil area; shelves in WI cooler soiled and need to be cleaned; wiping cloth bucket tested low for QA sanitizer; failure to provide paper towels or a continuous towel system that supplies the user with a clean towel at each handwashing sink or group of adjacent sinks; ear of establishment used for storage of equipment and other unnecessary items.

Waffle House, 1128 North Chalkville Road, Trussville (78): Points deducted for failure to provide an employee health policy that states what actions are necessary when an employee has a specific symptom or diagnosis related to diseases that are transmissible through food; failure to provide hot water for sanitization in the dishmachine; failure to provide wash solution temperature in stationary rack; badly rusted shelving in the RI cooler in the rear prep area; water temperature measurements below minimum required at all fixtures; condensate leak in the RI cooler in the rear prep area; spilled grease and trash on the ground in the dumpster enclosure; condensation dripping from the HVAC vent over the dishpit.

Bogues, 3120 Clairmont Avenue, Forest Park (79): Points deducted for heavy presence of live flies and several live roaches in the back dishwashing/prep area; failure to label all food or ingredients that are not in the original package with the common name of the food; raw meats stored on shelves, above produce and other ready to eat foods; visible food residue buildup under the slicer guard and on the splash area of the table top mixer; failure to provide a chemical sanitizer used in mechanical ware washing equipment; buildup of grease, dust and food residue buildup in the interiors of reach-in coolers, exterior of hot holding units, storage shelves, oven racks, and on equipment doors, sides and handles; visible gaps between the layers of the chopping block table; using towels to catch grease under the cooking equipment; unable to locate thermometer in the back reach-in cooler and hot holding unit; heavy residue buildup inside of the equipment and around the doors; failure to maintain plumbing in good repair; heavy grease and residue buildup on the floors under equipment and in traffic areas; grease and food residue buildup on walls behind the equipment; heavy dust buildup on vent covers on the ceiling and on coolers; dirty mops, brooms stored in corners and in the mop sink.

Waffle House, 1833 Crestwood Blvd., Irondale (79): Points deducted for failure to maintain food at proper temperature; scoops left inside food items in make table (hash browns) stored inside the food; dish machine in poor repair; exteriors of most equipment soiled with food debris; interiors of RI units also soiled with food debris; failure to provide chlorine solution at 50 to 200 ppm for storing cloths used to wipe counters and equipment; clean wiping cloths in bags stored on floor in dry storage area; hot water valve on 3-compartment sink is broken; dumpster is soiled and is attracting pests to outside of establishment; flies seen in kitchen and back storage area (air curtain on back door is operable); roach seen crawling on floor in dish machine area; hood filters soiled with grease and need to be cleaned; mop stored in dirty water.

Leeds Coosa Mart, 7680 Parkway Drive, Leeds (82): Points deducted for failure to provide an employee health policy that states what actions are necessary when an employee has a specific symptom or diagnosis related to diseases that are transmissible through food; failure to provide clean-up procedures for employees; failure to provide food safety training for all employees; failure to maintain dishwashing equipment in good condition; boxes of take-out cups on the floor in the storage area; failure to provide paper towels at each handwashing sink; failure to keep the dumpster lids closed; accumulation of crates, racks, and cast-off items on the rear exterior of the building.

Logan's Roadhouse, 5083 Pinnacle Square, Trussville (83): Points deducted for not keeping food at proper temperature; black mold observed on the interior of the ice machine and food residue observed on the meat slicer blade and chopper piece; unclean nonfood contact surfaces; flies observed throughout the food prep area; failure to maintain physical facilities in good repair.

Wing Out Sports Grill, 1806 Avenue V, Ensley (85): Points deducted for not maintaining food at a proper temperature; accumulation of grime and grease on the bottom shelf of prep tables; equipment in poor repair; accumulation grease and grime on hood filters.
