Robbery Attempt Turns Into Birmingham Homicide: Police

BIRMINGHAM , AL — A homicide investigation is underway after a man was shot and killed in west Birmingham during what police say was a robbery attempt. The incident occurred Sunday just after 4 a.m. at 528 3rd Ave West.

Sgt. Rod Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department said an off-duty officer was working an extra security detail when shots were fired. Mauldin said the officer found a man on the ground suffering a gunshot wound. The man was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Mauldin said preliminary investigation suggest the victim approached a person in a robbery attempt which resulted in the victim being shot.
