Here are the top three stories in Birmingham today:
- After last week's invasion of Ukraine, Russia and Belarus have officially been banned from the World Games 2022 in Birmingham this summer. The World Games Board of Directors made the decision yesterday in accordance with the International Olympic Committee's Executive Board's recommendation to bar Russia's 69 qualifying athletes and Belarus' 11 from competing. Mayor Randall Woodfin and World Games 2022 CEO Nick Sellers will be discussing the decision at the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham today. (Birmingham Patch)
- The University of Alabama at Birmingham has demolished two of its buildings to make way for a massive new genomic research hub. On Monday, the school released a timelapse video of the Kracke Building and the Pittman Center on Seventh Avenue South being torn down. The forthcoming Altec Styslinger Genomic Medicine and Data Sciences Building is "designed to meet the specific needs of genomics and precision medicine investigators and their programs," according to UAB. As part of the $75 million project, the Lyons Harrison Research Building will also be renovated to create 145,000 square feet of office and meeting space. (WVTM13 Birmingham)

Looking for a healthy alternative to that mid-week glass (or three) of wine? Our partners at Betera set out to create beverages that were sophisticated and flavorful enough to drink at cocktail hour but with zero hangover risk. (Their motto is “Drink like there’s tomorrow.”) Betera's drinks are designed by a Michelin-starred chef using natural botanicals — they're lightly effervescent, sippable, refreshingly bitter and at home in a stem glass or in a highball on the rocks. Betera offers three recipes — Rhubarb-Hibiscus, Elderflower-Lime and Ginger-Orange. We’ve tried all three and loved them equally — we recommend the mixed case as a great place to start.
