Severe Storms Possible Thursday Afternoon Near Birmingham Metro

Storms accompanied by 60 mph winds are possible throughout the northern and central parts of Alabama Thursday.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Although the weather has been somewhat pleasant in the Birmingham metro Thursday morning, that may not last through the day. The National Weather Service in Birmingham said strong to severe storms are possible for several counties in the metro area.

There is a marginal risk for severe storms capable of producing damaging winds up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail. The threat area will be generally along and northwest of a line from Jasper to Tuscaloosa to Livingston.

The NWS said the odds of any one spot seeing a storm later today are about 1 in 4, and the high this afternoon will be in the 89- to 92-degree range.

The daytime heating process makes the air over Alabama unstable, which will likely cause random, scattered showers and thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and evening.
