Severe Weather Threat Remains Low For Birmingham

A system expected to hit Birmingham will likely run through Southwest Alabama, but rain and high winds remain likely for Birmingham.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - A large weather system expected to come through Alabama Thursday afternoon which will bring heavy to severe thunderstorms to the southwestern portion of the state. According to a report by the National Weather Service in Birmingham, the storms began in the western portion of Alabama Thursday morning, and are focused more south of Birmingham than predicted earlier.

The latest report from the NWS said showers will continue to move east towards the Birmingham metro area, And that a severe threat remains low at this time. However, there is still a potential for re intensification later this afternoon.

The state is still recovering from heavy storms that caused damage in several counties in East Alabama last week. The cities of Jacksonville, Anniston and Rainbow City had some of the worst damage, although fortunately there were no fatalities reported from the storms. A NWS report said the damage in Jacksonville was consistent with an EF-2 tornado of 120-130 mph winds. They believe the tornado may have strated in Southside and tracked approximately 30 miles into Georgia.
