BIRMINGHAM, AL — Parts of Jefferson County and Birmingham could be affected by a storm system expected to run through Alabama Thursday. The National Weather Service in Birmingham said Jefferson County is included in an area with slight to marginal chances of severe weather.

Scattered thunderstorms will form by mid to late afternoon and early Thursday evening, according to meteorologist James Spann. Those storms could be strong, possibly severe in spots. The NWS has defined a slight risk (level 2 out of 5) of severe thunderstorms for areas north and west of Birmingham, with a marginal risk (level 1 of 5) for the rest of the state.

Spann said heavier storms will be capable of producing strong winds and hail but tornadoes are not expected. "Storms will fade late tonight, although a few showers could linger after midnight with an upper low still spinning away west of the state," Spann said.
