Update: Domestic Violence Shooting Suspect Arrested
The 46-year-old man accused of shooting and critically injuring his ex-wife yesterday morning has been arrested

BIRMINGHAM, AL -
The 46-year-old man accused of shooting and critically injuring his ex-wife yesterday morning has been arrested. Just before 8:00 yesterday morning deputies responded to a residence in the 300 block of Trenton Street where they found a 45-year-old woman suffering critical injuries. She was taken to an area hospital, where initial reports were that she had died, but she remains on life support.
Information from the scene is that the victim’s ex-husband broke into the home where she and her children live. The children fled to a neighbor’s home and were not injured. The victim argued with the suspect. He pulled a gun and shot her. The suspect fled the scene in a silver Acura before deputies arrived. The suspect was identified as 46-year-old Dereck Jamaille Walker.
This afternoon detectives obtained arrest warrants formally charging Walker with Armed Burglary 1st Degree and Attempted Murder.
At about 2:30 this afternoon detectives received word from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office in Florida that Walker was in custody. He surrendered after a traffic stop, confessed to the shooting and told them they could find the gun he used in the glove box. Walker was taken to the Escambia County Jail to await extradition back to Jefferson County.
