BIRMINGHAM, AL — Colder temperatures are expected over most of Alabama this week, and some snowfall is in the forecast. But do not go stocking up on bread and milk, because meteorologists say the Birmingham area is not getting any snow, and the areas of the state that are will not be affected by the flurries.

Meteorologists James Spann said atmospheric profiles suggest rain could change to a period of light snow over the northern quarter of Alabama late in the day Tuesday and into Tuesday night. The best chance of seeing a few snowflakes will be north of U.S. 278, from Hamilton to Cullman to Gadsden.

"For those geographically challenged, cities like Birmingham, Anniston and Tuscaloosa are south of U.S. 278," Spann said.

"If there is any accumulation in Alabama, it should be over the far northwest corner of the state, around Muscle Shoals," Spann added. "This is where surface temperatures will be hovering around the freezing mark, and there will still be some good forcing (upward motion in the atmosphere) before the precipitation ends. The change to snow for the Shoals should come between 3 and 6 p.m. There is potential for one-quarter to one-half inch across far northwest Alabama."

Spann said no significant accumulation or impact is expected for now with temperatures in the mid 30s and warm soil. All precipitation will end after midnight Tuesday night.
