Spike In New Coronavirus Cases Confirmed In Jefferson County
After multiple days of fewer than 200 new COVID-19 cases, Jefferson County reported a spike in new cases Thursday.
MONTGOMERY, AL — After consecutive days reporting fewer than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases, the Alabama Department of Public Health confirmed 1,624 new cases of the virus Thursday, with 300 of those cases coming from Jefferson County.
The state also added 15 more COVID-19 deaths Thursday, bringing the fatality total in Alabama to 1,654.
Daily case numbers have been lower this week, with some of the lowest daily totals since the beginning of July. In the last two weeks, the state has confirmed 19,739 new cases, the first two-week stretch under 20,000 since June.

Jefferson County, after a week of daily new case totals under 200, confirmed 300 new COVID-19 cases Thursday, more than Mobile County and Montgomery County combined.

Counties reporting the most new cases of COVID-19 Thursday:
- Jefferson County: 300 new cases; 12,486 total
- Mobile County: 151 new cases; 9,420 total
- Montgomery County: 99 new cases; 6,449 total
- Etowah County: 74 new cases; 2,041 total
- Escambia County: 63 new cases; 1,044 total
