Suspect Charged In West Birmingham Shooting

A 33-year-old man has been charged with a deadly shooting at a Burger King restaurant in east Birmingham.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — A 33-year-old man has been charged with capital murder in the deadly shooting of of 44-year-old Charles L. Brown Oct. 14. Cortez Reshaw McGhee is accused of shooting Brown after an altercation at a Burger King restaurant.

Officers from the West Precinct responded to a call of an accident in the intersection of 2nd Avenue and 12th Street West at 8:45 p.m. Oct. 14. Upon arrival, responding officers found Brown in the driver’s seat of a van suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived along with the Jefferson County Coroner and pronounced Brown dead on the scene.

Sgt. Johnny Williams of the Birmingham Police Department said Brown was at the Burger King on Third Avenue West and Princeton Parkway that Monday night when there was some type of altercation between Brown and some others at the restaurant. Brown reportedly attempted to get away from the altercation and drove away in his van.

McGhee was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 4:03 p.m. Monday.
