Police Officer Shot, Suspect Dead in Birmingham Shooting

Two Birmingham officers were injured and a man is dead after a shooting in downtown Birmingham.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — An active shooter situation in downtown Birmingham Wednesday ended with the suspected shooter dead and two Birmingham police officers injured.

Police say the incident began as a robbery attempt at a convenience store on 22nd Street North. When police spotted the suspect leaving the store, they reportedly tried to stop him but he opened fire.

One of the officers was shot, and another officer was also injured, but not by gunfire, according to an Alabama Media Group report.

The officer, nine-year police veteran Cullen Stafford, was shot three times and is said to be in stable condition.

Police ordered all pedestrians outside a several block radius of the Redmont Hotel. There is still a large police presence in the area.

Just one Birmingham officer has died in the line of duty in 2019. In January, Birmingham police officer Wytasha Carter was shot and killed outside a nightclub while on duty.
