Tuberville's projected victory would again place two Republican senators from Alabama in Washington again, as Jones' election in 2017 was the first time since 1992 that a Democrat had been elected to the U.S. Senate from Alabama. Sen. Richard Shelby, who was elected as a Democrat in the 1992 election, switched his party affiliation to Republican in 1994.

"An Alabama Senate seat can not be bought," Tuberville said in his victory speech Tuesday night, referencing Jones' campaign out-raising his. "I want to thank Doug Jones for his effort, but it's time to go home."
