Veteran Birmingham Police Officer Announces Retirement

BIRMINGHAM, AL — When someone has served a community for more than three decades, stepping down from that duty is a monumental occasion. Such is the case with Deputy Chief Cedric Stevens of the Birmingham Police Department, who announced his retirement this week after 33 years on the force.

Stevens began the Birmingham Police Academy in September 1985. He graduated from the Birmingham Police Academy in March 1986 and was assigned to the North Precinct as a patrolman and later served as a Field Training Officer. In addition, he held assignments with the FBI Task Force, Department of Youth Services Gang Task Force and the Robbery Unit.

He was promoted to Sergeant in 1994 and reassigned to the West Precinct, then was promoted to Lieutenant in May 1999 and assigned to the East Precinct. In November 2000, he was reassigned to Vice/Narcotics and graduated from the U. S. Dept. of Justice DEA Commanders Academy that same year.

In January 2002, Stevens was assigned to North Precinct as the Evening Shift Commander. In 2005, he was assigned to the Youth Services Unit, and in 2008 he transferred to the Robbery Unit again. In January 2009, he was promoted to Captain and assigned as the Commander of the Property Room, Data Entry, I.D. Unit, Records and the Communications Unit before being assigned to the North Precinct as Commander where he served until he was promoted to Deputy Chief of Operations on June 7, 2018.

Stevens will remain in his current assignment until his official last day on September 13.
