Local Runoff Results: Rafferty, Scales, Tyson Winners

Neil Rafferty takes the runoff election for House District 54, while LaShunda Scales and Sheila Tyson won Jefferson County Commission seats.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Neil Rafferty has been declared the winner of the House District 54 runoff, while Jefferson County Commission seats went to current Birmingham City Council members Lashunda Scales and Sheila Tyson.

Alabama House District 54's Democratic primary runoff featured Birmingham AIDS Outreach Director Neil Rafferty and Birmingham environmentalist Jacqueline Gray Miller.

With 90 percent of precincts reporting:

Miller: 28%

Locally, two Jefferson County Commission seats were determined in the July 17 runoff. District 1 and District 2 involved current Birmingham City Council members, which means a special election for their replacements after their wins.

Councilwoman LaShunda Scales faced incumbent George Bowman for the District 1 seat, and Sheila Tyson will leave her Birmingham City Council seat after defeating incumbent Sandra Little Brown in District 2.

With 98 percent of precincts reporting:

District 1

Bowman: 43%

Scales: 57%

District 2

Brown: 47%

Tyson: 53%
