Birmingham, Ala. – For much of its 10-year history, many participants in the Birmingham Public Library’s Bards & Brews spoken word poetry-craft beer event have tackled the topic of race and social injustice in their poems. Held monthly, BPL's Bards & Brews has been hailed as a unifying voice for Birmingham's arts community.

On Friday, July 10, at 6:00 p.m., all of the poems presented during Bards & Brews: Poetic Justice virtual event will center on racism and social injustice issues that have dominated the national conversation the past six weeks since the tragic killing of George Floyd while in custody of Minneapolis police officers charged with his death.

The title of this month’s theme come from the 1993 movie, “Poetic Justice,” that starred Janet Jackson and the late rapper Tupac Shakur. In the film, Jackson plays a young hairdresser named Justice who writes poetry as a way to cope with the tragic shooting death of her boyfriend.

This will be the fourth-straight month that BPL is hosting a virtual Bards & Brews online. Bards & Brews veteran poet Voice Porter is emceeing the online event.
BPL’s Bards & Brews Facebook page will be broadcasting the spoken word poetry virtually through the web video conferencing site Zoom.
