BIRMINGHAM, AL — Want a little break from holiday shopping and college football? There is plenty to do in Birmingham this weekend, from holiday events, parades and live music.

ZooLight Safari Tree Lighting Ceremony, Birmingham Zoo, 6 p.m.: Come to the Birmingham Zoo as they illuminate their magnificent 30-foot tall tree for a spectacular show of sparking lights.

Taylor Hicks sings Elton John and Christmas Classics; Lyric Theater, Birmingham, 8 p.m.: American Idol winner Taylor Hicks performs live at the Lyric, with favorites by Elton John and some of classic Christmas songs.

Art After 5: Movie Merrython II; Birmingham Museum of Art, Birmingham, 5:30 p.m.: See screenings of "Home Alone," and "Reindeer Games" along with drinks, food and more.

Saturday, Dec. 7

Saturn Holiday Market; Saturn, Birmingham, 10 a.m.: Manitou Supply is expanding their vintage fair. The Saturn Holiday Market is sure to have the raddest vintage, art and handmade goods offered this shopping season.

103.7 The Q's 15th Annual Little Black Dress Party; Iron City, Birmingham, 8 p.m.: See a live performance by Bryce Vine, a rapper and singer who blends pop, rap, and alternative rock influences, delivering witty, thoughtful lyrics and catchy hooks.

The Polar Express; Alabama Theatre, Birmingham, 2 p.m.: Come see the historic Alabama Theatre's presentation of The Polar Express, an inspiring adventure based on the beloved children's book by Chris Van Allsburg.

Sunday, Dec. 8

Birmingham City Christmas Parade; Linn Park, Birmingham, 3 p.m. - 7 p.m.: Birmingham's Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting will kick off at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, December 8 with Birmingham's Purple Heart-awarded veteran Noah Galloway serving as the Grand Marshal alongside Mayor Randall Woodfin.

Magic City Nutcracker Patron Party and Reception; Grand Bohemian Hotel, Mountain Brook, 5:30 p.m.: Become a patron of the Magic City Nutcracker by attending the reception festivities at the lovely Grand Bohemian Hotel. By purchasing a ticket you are invited to the exclusive after party with the directors and professionals of the ballet. All proceeds benefit the Magic City Nutcracker and its scholarship fund for need-based financial aid and college scholarships that are given to eligible danders every season.
