Wreck Victims Lost In Woods Found After Off-Roading Crash
A man and woman who crashed while riding off-road near I-22 were discovered after an hour-long search.
BIRMINGHAM, AL - Multiple first responders convened to an area off I-22 to search for two accident victims lost in the woods for more than an hour Thursday afternoon. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, Fultondale Fire Department, Birmingham police, Fultondale police, Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies and Regional Paramedical Service responded to the scene just after 1 p.m.
A victim called 911 about 1:15 p.m. Thursday to report he had crashed off Interstate 22 near Coalburg Road and was stuck, and lost, in a wooded area. He said he was injured, and then his phone went dead, authorities said. The male caller and a female had been off-roading in a four-wheel vehicle, according to an Alabama Media Group report.
A Hummer was used to search by ground and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Star 1 helicopter assisted in the search. Those aboard Star 1 were able to spot the wreckage from the air and hovered over that location until the ground crews could get to the victims. One victim suffered minor injuries and the other was not hurt.
