Water rates expected to increase in Florence (waff.com subscription) — Florence residents could soon see their base water bill jump from $15.07 to $24.75 as the city council considers a substantial rate increase to stabilize the heavily indebted Water and Gas Department. City leaders say the hike is critical to avoid a state takeover, keep up with regional rates, and fund long-needed repairs to aging water lines serving about 28,000 local customers.
   

2. HPD asking for help finding missing 73 year old man (whnt.com) — Police are asking for help finding 73-year-old Angel Toquero Santos, last seen Sunday afternoon near Savannah Highway and Coffee Road in Florence and believed to have a condition that may impair his judgment. He may be driving a tan 2019 Honda CRV with Alabama plates; anyone who spots him should contact Huntsville Police or call 911 immediately.
   

3. Man airlifted after falling through roof, fire chief says (waff.com subscription) — A man in Florence was seriously hurt Tuesday after falling about 30 feet through a roof, striking a parked vehicle and landing on concrete before being airlifted to a Huntsville trauma center. Florence Fire and Rescue crews treated and stabilized him on scene before the flight, and no additional injuries were reported.
   

4. Boys High School Rankings: Fourth Top 25 poll released for Spring 2026 (soccerwire.com) — Florence High School’s boys soccer team has climbed to No. 14 in a new national Top 25 poll from United Soccer Coaches, reflecting a strong 19-1-1 record through April 19. The rankings place Florence among elite programs from Georgia, Oklahoma, Washington, and beyond this spring.
   

5. Florence pitch competition awards $25K to local startups (waaytv.com) — Florence just hosted the fifth annual Singing River Trail Launch Tank, where 11 North Alabama entrepreneurs pitched their ideas for a share of $25,000 in funding at Singin’ River Live. Lauderdale County founders took first and third place, and every finalist walked away with at least $1,000, underscoring Florence’s growing role in the region’s startup and innovation scene.
