15-Year-Old Girl Drowns At Oak Mountain State Park

A teenager drowned while swimming at the lake at Oak Mountain State Park over Labor Day weekend.

SHELBY COUNTY, AL — Labor Day weekend festivities turned tragic Monday when a 15-year-old girl drowned while with her family at Oak Mountain State Park. The girl has been identified as Daniyah Dawson of Birmingham, according to the Shelby County Coroner's Office.

A report from the Alabama State Parks Central District said the teen drowned at approximately 5:30 p.m. at the Oak Mountain State Park beach area.

"Park staff, park rangers, along with Pelham police, fire and rescue, all responded to the scene," said Kelly Ezell of the Alabama State Parks Central District in a statement. "Dawson’s body was recovered by Pelham fire and rescue divers at approximately 7:30 p.m. Our thoughts are with the family and their loved ones during this very difficult time."
