Bucs Drop Opener to Grayson

Hoover dropped its season opener Saturday night to Grayson (Ga.), 35-26 at Grayson Community Stadium.

LOGANVILLE, GA - Hoover High School dropped its 2017 season opener Saturday night, losing to Grayson (Ga.) for the second consecutive year. Grayson held off a Hoover comeback in a battle of state champions, but Bucs players recall last season's defeat, a season in which they went on to win the rest of their games and capture another state title.

Grayson scored on its first two series, and held Hoover to a field goal in the first quarter, and never looked back. Following the opening kickoff, the Rams took a 7-0 lead early in the game as Camron Thompson’s 57-yard run was followed by D.J. Irons’ 1-yard touchdown run.

Hoover running back Larry McCammon rushed 15 times for 102 yards and three touchdowns. Auburn commitments Shedrick Jackson (five catches, 150 yards) and George Pickens (five catches, 83 yards) helped keep the Bucs in the game, but it was not quite enough.

McCammon cut the lead back to 28-20 with 10 minutes left on a 1-yard run, and scored his third rushing touchdown with 7:07 left when he ran it in from the 4-yard line. Hoover attempted a 2-point conversion to tie the game but it failed. Grayson scored again to put the game out of reach.

Hoover hosts Meridian (Miss.) this week.
