Hoover Police Department Introduces New K9 Officer

Kelly, a three-year-old Belgian Malinois, is the newest addition to the Hoover PD.

HOOVER, AL - The Hoover Police Department's newest officer is only three years old and weighs 50 pounds. That might seem strange until you realize the officer is Kelly, a Belgian Malinois, who is the latest K9 addition, partnered with HPD officer Jacob Strawn.

According to a release by the Hoover PD, Kelly and Strawn finished their comprehensive training together, they hit the streets earlier this year. Kelly has two years of policing experience prior to joining Hoover PD. She was working with Compact 2020 in the Shelby County DA’s Office when her human partner transferred to another agency.

"We were very fortunate to acquire Kelly and put her to work," said the HPD statement. "She is classified as a narcotics canine, with her special skill being the ability to detect illegal drugs."

Strawn has been in law enforcement for almost nine years. He has prior experience with the Montevallo Police Department and has been with Hoover for two years. "This is his first K9 assignment, and Officer Strawn loves every minute of it," the HPD said.

Belgian Malinois are high-energy with a high mental capacity and are quick to comprehend, and it needs a job to do. They are good for working and competition obedience which is why they make excellent police and guard dogs. This type of work is currently their main occupation. Belgians are determined and observant with strong protective/territorial instincts.
