Lady Jags Headed To State Finals

The Spain Park girls basketball team will make its second straight appearance in the state championship Saturday.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Spain Park Lady Jags are headed back to the AHSAA basketball championship after a 60-51 semifinal win over Lee-Montgomery Thursday. This win was not easy, however. The Lady Jags were behind 11 points at the start of the final quarter of the game.

Spain Park ended the game on a 31-14 run, and earned themselves a match up with McGill-Toolen in the championship. McGill-Toolen's girls and boys teams will play in the finals Saturday, with the boys team facing Mountain Brook.

Sarah Ashlee Barker and Claire Holt led the charge for the Jaguars, who improved to 30-6 on the season. Holt, who will play at Richmond next season, was the top scorer for Spain Park with 22 points, while Barker added 13.

Spain Park looks to achieve what the team came so close to accomplishing last season. The Lady Jags fell in overtime to cross-city rival Hoover in last year's championship game. Spain Park and McGill-Toolen will face off at 4 p.m. at the BJCC's Legacy Arena.
