1. Huntsville exempts hearing aids from some taxes but change won't take place for 12 months (al.com) — Huntsville residents who rely on hearing aids will see them exempted from city sales and use tax starting Sept. 1, 2027, under a new council ordinance. The change, aligning with state law through 2029, follows emotional testimony from a Huntsville resident and others who argued hearing aids are necessities, not luxuries, and will cost the city about $150,000 a year from its $360 million budget.
2. $18 million grant funds construction on new veterans cemetery in north Alabama (al.com) — Huntsville is set to gain a new state veterans cemetery in the city's north end, funded by an $18 million federal grant to serve more than 16,000 local veterans and their families. The project will add hundreds of burial and cremains sites, support buildings, and full infrastructure, significantly expanding memorial options for North Alabama while complementing an expansion in Spanish Fort.
3. City of Huntsville approves annexation of 236 acres in Limestone County (hvilleblast.com) — Huntsville has approved annexing more than 236 acres in Limestone County, paving the way for a new single-family neighborhood at LeCroix Farms in West Huntsville. Located near Huntsville Brownsferry Road and Greenbrier Parkway, the currently rural land will likely transition from farmland to residential development, signaling continued westward growth and potential new housing options for local residents.
4. Breaking down Huntsville's $360 million budget for 2027 (waff.com) — Huntsville's City Council has approved a $360 million budget for 2027 after more than six hours of debate, keeping employee cost-of-living raises at 2%. The plan funds infrastructure, a new downtown library branch, and a revamped pay structure for police and fire, while some residents voiced frustration that wage increases don't go far enough.
5.
