Here are the top 3 stories in Mobile today:
- Yesterday's Fat Tuesday festivities kicked off in Mobile with its 2022 Carnival. Parades began at 10:30 a.m. with the Order of Athena, followed by the Knights of Revelry, King Felix III and the Comic Cowboys, and the MAMGA Mammoth Parade. Parade-goers were encouraged to arrive early to stake out a parade-viewing spot along the barricades in downtown Mobile. (AL.com)
- Starting March 5, Carnival cruise ships will once again leave from the Port of Mobile. Cruises aboard the Carnival Ecstasy include destinations like Cozumel, Key West, Amber Cove, and more. The resumed cruises will likely give Mobile's tourism industry a boost. (BHAMNow)
- The World Monuments Fund included the Africatown community on its 2022 World Monuments Watch. The list is a selection of "25 of the world's most significant heritage sites in need of immediate attention." Africatown was founded by survivors of the final voyage of the Clotilda, which brought a cargo of Africans into slavery in the United States long after such voyages had been outlawed. Survivors who'd endured slavery founded an independent community where they could preserve folkways they remembered. (AL.com)
