Owner Reza Hejazi hopes to rezone a nearby residential lot for a new store, while thousands of loyal customers are signing a petition and raising money to support the move before the city council weighs in.
2. Mobile resolution faults Housing Authority as city moves to fill $1.95M Taylor Landing gap (mynbc15.com) — Mobile leaders are weighing a resolution to plug a $1.95 million funding gap for the Taylor Landing affordable housing project, using federal block grant dollars starting October 1. The proposal criticizes the Mobile Housing Authority's role in neighborhood decline near Oaklawn Homes and ties the funding decision to state tax credits that could reshape housing around Baltimore Street.
3. Mobile DA: Uptick in financial exploitation of the elderly prompts warning (wkrg.com) — Mobile County District Attorney Keith Blackwood is warning older Mobile residents about a rise in financial exploitation cases, including scams that may involve family, caregivers, or strangers. He urges families to talk with elderly loved ones, watch for sudden outsiders managing finances, and report suspected abuse to the DA's office, which now has tools to trace cryptocurrency-based schemes.
4. Woman indicted on murder charges in Mobile crash that killed two (mynbc15.com) — Mobile residents are learning more about a February crash that left two passengers dead and another seriously hurt, after a Mobile County grand jury indicted a local woman on murder and assault charges. Prosecutors allege she drove recklessly and possibly under the influence before the wreck; she is being held on high bonds and remains presumed innocent.
5. Father witnesses son's deadly car accident with cement truck in North Mobile County (wkrg.com) — A 21-year-old man was killed in a crash with a cement truck on Kushla McLeod Road in north Mobile County, and his father witnessed the burning wreckage after swerving to avoid the same truck. The family has hired an attorney as state troopers investigate what caused the truck to cross into the wrong lane and whether anyone will face charges.
