Here are the top three stories today in Mobile:

  1. The Mobile City Council is considering an ordinance that would designate all streets with a speed limit of 25 miles per hour or less as low-speed vehicle streets. The proposed ordinance is designed primarily for the use of golf carts, a popular transportation option for those in residential areas such as downtown. Golf carts and other low-speed vehicles would be able to cross over, though not drive through, major thoroughfares like Government Street. (UTV 44)
  2. This Mardi Gras season, students at Augusta Evans School took part in an annual Mobile tradition: trading donuts for beads. The students collected almost 28.5 tons of beads and received over 5,200 vouchers for Krispy Kreme donuts in return. The students at Augusta Evans will raise funds for their school by packaging the beads, then selling them to mystic societies for next year's Mardi Gras. (NBC 15 WPMI)
  3. Mobile resident Clarke Raines has been found guilty of murdering his mother, who he allegedly hog-tied, according to investigators and prosecutors. The victim, 68-year-old Kay Raines, was reported missing in January 2017, with her body found later that year in a shallow grave. Prosecutors say Clarke faces the possibility of a life sentence due to prior convictions. Said Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich, "I am so glad that we were finally able to get justice for Kay Raines [...and] I would like to thank the jury for coming back with this verdict. You have helped remove a violent individual from this community." (Fox 10 News)
