Here are the top stories in Mobile today:
- Unemployment rates in the Mobile area have decreased in recent months, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Mobile County unemployment rate was 3.8 percent in October, down from 4.1 percent in September. That reflected some improvement from October 2020, when the unemployment rate stood at 6.2 percent. By comparison, the national unemployment rate dropped from 4.6 percent to 4.2 percent from October to November. (Mobile Patch)
- A former employee of a medical staffing company in Mobile admitted she used her position to steal personal information, which she then used to obtain more than $127,000 in fraudulent loans since 2018. Roseanna Taylor, 41, pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy and wire fraud charges on Wednesday. She could face almost five years in prison, although prosecutors may recommend a shorter sentence in exchange for Taylor's help in prosecuting others involved in the scheme. (FOX10 News)
- The City of Mobile is offering up to $10,000 in down payment assistance to qualifying frontline healthcare workers and active certified teachers who are first-time homebuyers, meet federal income requirements, and intend to occupy the home as their primary residence. (WKRG News 5)
- The University of Mobile business office has spearheaded a campus-wide holiday toy drive effort to ensure Gulf Coast child has a present under the tree this year. (Press Release Desk)
- Mobile Police responded to a deadly shooting on Pecan Street on Wednesday afternoon, where they found an unidentified victim dead on the front lawn of a home. (WKRG News 5)
