Here are the top three stories today in Mobile:
- The US House and Senate voted to pass a major appropriations bill that dedicates more than a billion dollars in funding for the Mobile area. There is going to be $300 million for the Port and around $100 million more for the airport, that will be used for the Downtown Airport Project. The Downtown Airport is scheduled to be completed in the summer or fall of 2024. (UTV 44)
- The Mobile County Public School System has a lot of positions that need to be filled. Administrators say there's a high need for certain teachers in the areas of special education, math, and science. There's also a need for staff support roles including custodians, bus drivers, clerical staff, paraprofessionals, and substitutes. The state has recently made changes to the qualifications needed to teach to help speed up the hiring process but says it doesn't mean the expectations for finding qualified teachers will be lowered. (NBC 15 WPMI)
- West Mobile residents will have another option for emergency medical care.
University of South Alabama Health announced the completion of construction of its freestanding emergency department at 181 Hillcrest Road in west Mobile. This facility is scheduled to open to the public at noon on Mar. 14 and is intended to provide people who live and work in west Mobile with more convenient access to advanced emergency and diagnostic care.
