Here are the top stories in Mobile today:

  1. Mobile parents are growing increasingly frustrated over the continued delays in COVID-19 food assistance, especially as the holiday season approaches and inflation continues to impact families across the country. Around 470,000 low-income Alabamians qualified for a program referred to as "P-EBT," which would transfer the money for students' subsidized school lunches to their parents' Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards while schools were closed during the pandemic. The money should have been received in September, say parents, but the latest update says funds will come "sometime in fall 2021." (FOX10 News)
  2. The new Africatown Heritage House is starting to take shape, says the Mobile County Government. The 5,000-square-foot building will have an entry porch, lobby, restrooms, conference room, offices, and exhibit hall. A memorial garden will also be designed as part of the landscape and will incorporate sculptural ceramics from renowned artist Charles Smith. Pieces of the Clotida shipwreck that have been recovered from the Mobile River will also be on view, on loan from the Alabama Historical Commission. (Press Release Desk)
  3. Due to mechanical issues yesterday morning, the Mobile Museum of Art has been closed until further notice. The museum asks patrons to keep an eye on its social media channels and website for updates. (Press Release Desk)
  4. A new speakeasy-style restaurant is coming to downtown Mobile. West Food Bar, which will serve a chef-driven, farm-to-table menu with steak, fish, and seafood, will be located at 69 St Michael Street and deliver a "prohibition speakeasy atmosphere with craft cocktails." (WKRG News 5)
  5. The Mobile Waterfront Rescue Mission is in need of warm clothing donations, including jeans, scarves, and sweaters, as well as monetary donations to help their clients. You can visit the Mission in person at 279 N. Washington Ave. to donate clothes or go to its website to donate money. (NBC 15 WPMI)
