Phone Scammer Claims To Be Mountain Brook Police

MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL - Phone scams seem to occur on a more frequent basis in recent years, and Mountain Brook residents are not immune. The Mountain Brook Police Department has reported that a recent scam is targeting Mountain Brook residents - as the caller's number appears as the MBPD.

" If you receive a call from someone saying they are a detective with the Mountain Brook Police Department asking for your social security number to verify you were a victim of identity theft, it is a scam," said a statement from the MBPD. "Apparently, someone has cloned the Police Departments number and has made several of these calls to local residents."

The MBPD said detectives would never ask for someone's social security number over the phone, and that a detective would handle the case in person rather than over the phone.

"When in doubt, don't give any information and contact the Police Department," the MBPD said.

The Federal Communications Commission says it's best not to pick up a call from an unknown number because if you do, criminals will know your number is active.
