Man Involved In Fatal I-65 Wreck Pleads Guilty

A Calera man involved in a fatal 2016 crash on I-65 has entered a plea of guilty to criminally negligent homicide.

SHELBY COUNTY, AL - A 30-year-old Calera man has entered a guilty plea for his involvement in a fatal wreck on I-65 in 2016.

According to a report by Alabama Media Group, Daniel Joseph Robinson, 30, pleaded guilty Tuesday to criminally negligent homicide in the August 2016 crash that killed 43-year-old Robert Alan Gentry. Robinson was originally charged with reckless murder.

Shelby County Circuit Judge William Bostick III sentenced Robinson to 10 years in prison, split with one to serve. He was also ordered to complete a substance abuse treatment program while in prison.

The incident occurred on I-65 near Alabaster. Gentry was inside his 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer and was parked on the interstate shoulder, when he was struck by a 2008 Nissan Altima driven by Robinson. Gentry's car was then hit again by a 2006 Hyundai Sonata, and caught fire.

Court record show Robinson was under the influence of alcohol and driving "under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to human life" at the time of the crash.
