Threat At Oak Mountain Middle School Results In Charges

An Oak Mountain Middle School student made a threat directed at another student regarding the use of a gun.

SHELBY COUNTY, AL - A student at Oak Mountain Middle School was taken into custody for allegedly making threats toward another student involving use of a gun. On Thursday, November 1, the school resource officer assigned to Oak Mountain Middle School received a report from school officials regarding the threat, and an investigation followed.

After a thorough search, officials determined that the threat did not pose any immediate physical threat to students. However, the verbal threat was determined to be serious and as a result, there was a disruption in school activities.

The incident was investigated and resulted in the arrest of the juvenile student for Terrorist Threat (13A-10-15). The juvenile was transported to the Shelby County Juvenile Detention Center. Shelby County Sheriff John Samaniego said he wants parents to know that the school resource officers assigned to Oak Mountain Middle School and other schools are there to ensure students are able to learn in the safest environment possible.

In this case, he said, the system in place worked as it should. "The cooperation between school officials, the school resource officer and students helped to bring this incident to a quick resolution," he said.
