18-Wheeler Strikes Man Fleeing Traffic Stop In Tuscaloosa

The Tuscaloosa Police Department says a man was struck and injured by an 18-wheeler Tuesday evening as he fled on foot from a traffic stop.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — The Tuscaloosa Police Department says a man was struck and injured by an 18-wheeler as he fled on foot from a traffic stop Tuesday evening.

TPD said shortly following the incident that an officer with the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force first made the traffic stop at 6:56 p.m. on I-20/59 near the I-359 intersection.

The officer reported that the driver pulled over, but exited the vehicle before officers approached and was struck by an 18-wheeler as he ran into the woods. Despite his injuries, the man continued to flee police before being apprehended near the interstate.

A TPD spokesperson said the man's injuries are not thought to be life-threatening and he is currently receiving medical treatment. He is expected to face charges upon his release from the hospital.

Traffic was impacted for about half an hour during the ordeal, with motorists diverted to Interstate 359.
