The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency officials said Bruce R. Kornegay, 70, was critically injured in a single-vessel incident that occurred at approximately 2:22 p.m. Sunday on Lake Demopolis near the Tombigbee River in Marengo County.

ALEA said Kornegay was operating a 2019 18-foot Bass Tracker vessel when he was ejected from the boat.

After being thrown from the vessel, investigators said Kornegay was then struck by his unmanned boat.

Kornegay was transported to Whitfield Regional Hospital in Demopolis, where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

ALEA said Kornegay was not wearing a personal flotation device at the time of the crash and was also not using the vessel’s emergency cut-off switch, commonly known as a kill switch.

The incident remains under investigation by ALEA’s Marine Patrol Division.
