Carbon Hill Inmate Escapes, Suspected Of Apartment Break-Ins

Here's the latest after an inmate at the Carbon Hill jail escaped Wednesday evening during a safety-related evacuation at the jail.

CARBON HILL, AL — The Carbon Hill Police Department says an inmate from its jail is on the run after escaping sometime Wednesday.

Joe Brandon Thornton, 32, is also known as "Chewy" and was last seen wearing a navy blue jail uniform. Police said in an update late Wednesday evening that Thornton is suspected of breaking in to two different apartments in Walker County with elderly women inside following his escape Wednesday evening during an evacuation related to a safety issue in the jail.

Neither of the women were harmed and Thornton reportedly fled before police were called.
